Zips coach J.D. Brookhart was on Pitt's staff when the Panthers gained more than 400 yards in a 34-19 victory over N.C. State. Two other current Akron assistants also have worked on then-Panthers coach Walt Harris' staff.
And quarterback Luke Getsy also was schooled in Harris' system at Pitt. He started one game in 2003 before losing the job to Tyler Palko and joined right guard Andy Alleman in transferring to Akron.
"They've got an awful lot of coaches that coached against us in the Tangerine Bowl," N.C. State coach Chuck Amato said Monday. "(And Getsy) is a big-league quarterback. He left, and rightly, probably so, because quarterback's a position where, if you're not the man and you're the same age as somebody else, you might not get your chance."
